Here's the terminology used at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center:

Pods and Blocks

The facility is organized into pods, with each pod containing multiple blocks. The original 864-bed facility was built with four pods, each having six blocks and one recreation yard. After the 1990s expansion, the rated capacity grew to over 2,000, then the facility expanded again to its current capacity of around 3,077 beds across multiple housing towers.

So when referring to housing assignments, the terminology is:

  • Pod (e.g., Pod A, Pod B) - the larger housing division
  • Block within each pod - the subdivision where cells are grouped
  • Tower - referring to the larger physical buildings in the complex

Unit Types

Beyond general population, the facility has specialized units for:

  • Administrative segregation
  • Disciplinary detention
  • Protective custody
  • Medical unit
  • Mental health housing

Security levels run from minimum to maximum, with pod assignments varying by classification. Men, women, and juveniles are housed in separate units.

General Population

This is the standard term for non-restricted housing. Inmates not assigned to segregation, protective custody, medical, or mental health units are in general population, distributed across the pods based on their classification.

When looking at inmate location info from the inmate search tool, you typically see the booking number, booking date, charges, and current housing location, which would be expressed as a pod and block combination (for example, something like "2A-104" indicating a tower, pod, block, and cell number).
