Parenting From Prison in Texas
Two things about Texas's communication system that most families get wrong at the start.
First: mail does not go to the unit. Since September 2023, all personal mail for Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmates goes to a digital mail processing center in Dallas. The address is **PO Box 660400, Dallas, TX 75266-0400**. A letter addressed to the unit where the inmate is housed will not arrive as personal correspondence. It will be diverted, and the inmate will not receive it.
Second: you do not have to be on the inmate's approved Visitors List to register for phone calls. In most states in this series, the phone list and the visitor list are connected, or the phone registration requires some form of pre-approval. In Texas, phone registration is separate. Register your phone number through the Texas Inmate Telephone Friends & Family Enrollment site with the inmate's TDCJ ID number, and you can receive calls regardless of your visitor list status.
Knowing both of those things before the first week prevents the two most common breakdowns in contact: a letter that never arrives because it went to the wrong address, and a family member who does not register their phone because they think they need to be on the visitor list first.
The Digital Mail Processing Center: Dallas, Not the Unit
Since September 6, 2023, all TDCJ units route incoming personal mail through a centralized Digital Mail Processing Center. Mail is sorted, scanned, and uploaded to the inmate's tablet in color. Photos, drawings, and other permitted personalization are scanned and made permanently available for the inmate on the device.
**All personal mail address format:**
Texas Department of Criminal Justice
Inmate's Full First and Last Name + TDCJ Number
PO Box 660400
Dallas, TX 75266-0400
The inmate's TDCJ ID number is required in the address. Without it, the letter cannot be matched to the right person in a system with 130,000+ inmates.
**What still goes to the unit:** legal mail; media mail; books, magazines, and publications from verified publishers; mail from businesses, organizations, and government agencies. Documents requiring the inmate's signature go through the unit's Law Library.
For Securus Customer Service questions about the digital mail system: **(800) 844-6591**.
The outbound mail from inmates has not changed. Letters from inside still travel as physical mail to the family.
**For a parent writing to their children:** write the letter and address it to Dallas. The child's response, once they know to address to Dallas rather than the unit, will be scanned and appear on the tablet in color. A child's drawing, scanned and displayed on the tablet, is still the child's drawing. The handwriting is still theirs. What changed is the delivery mechanism, not the relationship.
Phone Calls: Registration and AdvanceConnect
To receive phone calls from a TDCJ inmate, register your phone number through the **Texas Inmate Telephone Friends & Family Enrollment** system at the link on tdcj.texas.gov/offender_tele. You need the inmate's TDCJ ID number. The name on your driver's license or state ID must match the name on your phone service listing or billing name. Registration is separate from visitor approval.
**Effective December 1, 2025:** a funded **AdvanceConnect** account is required to pay for phone calls. This is a change from the prior system. If your phone number was previously registered but no AdvanceConnect account was set up, you need to create and fund one now at **securustech.net** or through the Securus Mobile app.
As an interim measure following the December 2025 change, Securus provides one free 60-second call per month to numbers not associated with a funded AdvanceConnect account. For ongoing contact, the funded account is required.
**Securus 24/7 Customer Care: 972-734-1111.** For TDCJ Inmate Technology Services: offenderphones@tdcj.texas.gov; (800) 848-4284.
All calls are monitored and recorded except attorney calls. No call forwarding, no three-way calls, no speakerphone. Inmates with major disciplinary problems, gang affiliations, or on death row are not eligible for phone access.
**Using the call well.** Texas's phone system is large and the call window varies by unit. Use the same discipline as every state in this series: one child per call, one specific question about their actual life this week, I love you at the end. In a system with 130,000 inmates across 100+ units, the personal call is the one thing that belongs specifically to your child. Make it feel that way.
E-Messaging: Electronic Messages to Every Inmate
E-messaging is available to all eligible TDCJ inmates and is separate from the digital mail letter channel. Register through the E-Messaging link at tdcj.texas.gov/offender_tele. Messages are delivered to the inmate's tablet.
E-messaging fills the space between phone calls. A message in the morning, a response to something the child said, a brief note before school - these daily contact points build the ongoing relationship that phone calls alone cannot sustain. If the tablet is active and the inmate is eligible, the message arrives and can be responded to.
Video Visitation: Two Systems, Different Rules
Texas offers two different video visitation systems, available at different facilities.
**Securus Remote Video Visitation:** $10.00, 60 minutes, limited to **one per month**, available only at select units: Clements, Connally, Crain, Garza West, Hutchins, Jester III, McConnell, Michael, Montford, Sanchez, Stiles, Travis, and Wynne. Must be scheduled in advance. Visits begin and end at the scheduled times. Visitors may log in one minute before start. Sessions not started within 15 minutes are rescheduled. Contact Securus at **1-877-578-3658**.
**Tablet Video Visitation:** FREE, 60 minutes, limited to **one per month**, at a different set of select facilities. Schedule through the warden's office. The visitor receives a text or email at the scheduled time. Check the TDCJ news page at tdcj.texas.gov for the current list of Tablet Video Visitation facilities, as the list changes.
Confirm which system is available at the specific unit before trying to schedule. If the unit has Tablet Video Visitation rather than Securus Remote, the scheduling process is different and the cost is zero.
In-Person Visiting: Ten People, Three Days a Week
The approved Visitors List at TDCJ is limited to **10 individuals age 18 and older** (the inmate's attorney is excluded from that count). This is the cap for who can ever visit in person. Ten slots covering all the adults in the children's lives: the co-parent, grandparents, aunts, uncles, family friends. Choose the 10 carefully because that is the full roster.
Visits are generally held on **Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays** and are approximately **two hours** in duration. All TDCJ facilities now use an advanced scheduling system. Arrangements to schedule visits may not be made on a holiday. A session that does not start within 15 minutes of the scheduled start time requires rescheduling.
Children who cannot be controlled by visiting adults will result in the adults being escorted out. Prepare children for what the visiting room looks like and how the visit runs before the first trip.
Monthly ACH Debit: Automatic Trust Fund Support
TDCJ offers a **free Monthly Checking Account Debit (ACH)** service for trust fund deposits. Complete an ACH authorization form and a set amount is automatically debited from your personal checking account once per month to a specified inmate. This is free to set up and removes the recurring task of remembering to fund the account.
Inmate Trust Fund contact: **936-438-8990**. The trust fund covers commissary purchases, medical co-pays, and other in-facility costs. Keeping the trust fund funded consistently is one of the most practical things a family can do for day-to-day life quality inside.
Texas's Scale: 100+ Units Across a Vast State
TDCJ is the largest state prison system in this series, housing more than 130,000 inmates across more than 100 units. The units range from the Walls Unit in Huntsville - the main unit for executions and one of the oldest in the system - to the Coffield Unit in Tennessee Colony, one of the largest prisons in the world by population. Clements Unit near Amarillo in the Panhandle is maximum security. Polunsky Unit near Livingston is death row. The Gatesville complex houses multiple women's units including Mountain View.
For families in the Houston metro, many units in the region are within 1-2 hours. For families in DFW, units in the Huntsville corridor are 2-3 hours south. For families in El Paso visiting someone at a unit in east Texas, the distance is several hundred miles - effectively a cross-state journey.
Texas's scale means the unit assignment matters enormously for the visiting contact. A unit near a family is a visit that happens regularly. A unit several hundred miles away is a visit that happens a few times a year at best.
For families separated by significant Texas distances, the digital mail, e-messaging, phone calls, and video visits carry the primary parenting contact. Use them all, systematically, as the weekly contact infrastructure. The in-person visit is the annual or seasonal anchor, not the weekly rhythm.
For the Family Holding Texas Together
Do these things first. Address all personal mail to PO Box 660400, Dallas TX 75266-0400 with the inmate's full name and TDCJ ID. Register for phone calls through the TDCJ enrollment site - you do not need to be on the visitor list to do this. Set up and fund the AdvanceConnect account at securustech.net. Set up e-messaging through the TDCJ e-messaging link.
For visiting: get on the approved Visitors List (remember the 10-person cap), and use the advanced scheduling system at the unit to book visits on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday.
Check whether the specific unit has Securus Remote Video or Tablet Video Visitation. If Tablet Video is available and free, use it monthly. If Securus Remote is available for $10, decide whether the $10 monthly video contact is worth it alongside the monthly in-person visit.
And keep the contact rhythmic. Texas is the largest system in this series. The scale can make it feel impersonal. The phone call, the digital letter, the e-message, the video visit, these are the channels that cut through the scale and make the contact specific to one parent and one child. Use every one.
Federal Prison in Texas: Beaumont, Big Spring, Bastrop, Fort Worth
Texas has a significant federal prison presence. The FCI Beaumont complex includes Low, Medium, High security facilities and USP Beaumont. FMC Fort Worth is a federal medical center. FCI Big Spring is medium security. FCI Bastrop is east of Austin. FCI Three Rivers is in south Texas.
If you are in federal custody at any BOP facility, the national BOP standard applies. **Phone:** 300 minutes per month, 15-minute call caps at $0.06 per minute, plus 100 extra minutes in November and December. **TRULINCS/CorrLinks:** $0.05 per minute on your end, free for the family, up to 30 approved contacts, text only, no attachments. Federal communication operates entirely separately from TDCJ's Securus/digital mail infrastructure.
FAQ
**Where do I send mail to someone in a Texas state prison?** All personal mail must go to the Digital Mail Processing Center: Texas Department of Criminal Justice / [Inmate's Full First and Last Name + TDCJ Number] / PO Box 660400 / Dallas, TX 75266-0400. Mail sent to the unit directly will not arrive as personal correspondence. Legal mail, media mail, and publications from verified publishers still go to the unit.
**Do I need to be on the visitor list to register for phone calls?** No. In Texas, phone registration is separate from the visitor list. You register your phone number through the Texas Inmate Telephone Friends & Family Enrollment system with the inmate's TDCJ ID number and set up a funded AdvanceConnect account. You do not need visitor approval.
**What changed about phone calls in December 2025?** Effective December 1, 2025, a funded AdvanceConnect account is required to pay for phone calls at TDCJ facilities. Families who were receiving calls under the prior system need to create and fund an AdvanceConnect account at securustech.net. Securus offers one free 60-second call per month to numbers not associated with a funded account as an interim measure.
**What are the two video visitation systems in Texas?** Securus Remote Video Visitation costs $10.00, lasts 60 minutes, is limited to one per month, and is available at select TDCJ units. Tablet Video Visitation is free, also 60 minutes, limited to one per month, and available at a different set of select units. Check the TDCJ news page for current facility lists. The two systems use different scheduling processes.
**How many people can be on the visitor list?** The approved Visitors List is limited to 10 individuals age 18 and older, not counting the inmate's attorney. Choose the list carefully because the cap is firm.
**How does the monthly ACH auto-debit work?** TDCJ offers a free monthly automatic bank debit service for trust fund deposits. Complete an ACH authorization form to set a fixed monthly amount to be automatically withdrawn from your checking account and deposited to the inmate's trust fund. Contact Inmate Trust Fund at 936-438-8990.
**What is the federal situation at the Beaumont complex and other Texas BOP facilities?** All Texas BOP facilities follow federal rules: 300 phone minutes per month with 15-minute call caps at $0.06 per minute, plus TRULINCS email through CorrLinks at $0.05 per minute on the inmate's end, free for families, up to 30 approved contacts, text only. Federal communication is entirely separate from TDCJ's Securus/digital mail system.
