The Monroe County Sheriff's Jail, which opened in 1974, operated as a full-time detention facility until 2001. That year, following the formation of the West Virginia Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority, all inmates serving sentences were transferred to the Eastern Regional Jail or the Southern Regional Correctional Facility, overseen by the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation (WVDCR). These regional facilities are equipped to house inmates from arrest through adjudication, providing necessary services such as housing, meals, and medical care.
Following the transition, the Monroe County Jail became a 12-hour holding facility, supporting all police agencies in the county. It now handles short-term detention, particularly for court appearances, and coordinates the transport of inmates to one of the regional jails as needed.
Sheriff Michael Miller oversees various law enforcement duties, including executing court orders and maintaining public peace. The sheriff’s office also manages the booking process when individuals are arrested, collecting personal details, and recording the arrest. However, without a full-service jail, arrestees are quickly transferred to regional facilities for secure detention. These regional centers provide comprehensive services such as inmate programs, legal resources, and visitation opportunities, ensuring secure detention while allowing the sheriff's office to focus on maintaining public order.
This collaborative arrangement between the sheriff's office and regional jails allows for efficient and cost-effective inmate management, leveraging regional resources to meet the needs of the justice system in Wood County.
