While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The FRDC serves as an intake and classification facility for the Missouri Department of Corrections, accommodating around 1,300 adult male and female offenders. Upon arrival, inmates undergo a comprehensive diagnostic process lasting two weeks, involving mental health screening, medical assessment, and educational evaluation by trained professionals. Following this, classification staff assess the inmates based on various criteria to determine the most suitable placement in a facility that meets their individual needs. Additionally, FRDC houses 200 permanent cadre inmates alongside the reception and orientation (R & O) offender population.
The classification unit at FRDC plays a crucial role in ensuring inmates are appropriately classified for housing and transfer to other institutions. Staff members oversee daily operations within housing units, managing transfers, work assignments, visitation schedules, and clothing distribution. FRDC's housing units accommodate inmates across different classifications, including those in the general population, administrative segregation, protective custody, treatment programs, or with specific diagnostic needs. This structured approach ensures that inmates receive the necessary support and services tailored to their circumstances.
