The Meherrin River Jail is a locally operated low to medium-security regional detention center situated at 9000 Boydton Plank Rd in Alberta, VA. This facility primarily houses individuals awaiting trial or sentencing, as well as those serving shorter sentences, typically less than five years. Meherrin River Jail accommodates detainees brought in by the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, the Virginia DOC, Alberta Police Department, and other nearby law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

New detainees arrive frequently and may be released on bail, under pretrial supervision, or on their recognizance with a commitment to appear in court. Those who remain in custody receive essential amenities, including secure accommodations, meals, and access to necessary services. To review recent arrest records for Virginia, you can access public records here.

The Meherrin River Regional Jail (MRRJ) is a state-of-the-art adult detention facility that serves three member jurisdictions: Brunswick County, Dinwiddie County, and Mecklenburg County. Situated along U.S. Route 1 near Alberta, the 697-bed facility houses both male and female offenders from these counties. Additionally, there is a Satellite Facility located just off Highway 58 in Boydton, VA, which is an 80-bed establishment designed for pre-trial and work-release offenders. This satellite location also accommodates both male and female inmates.

The MRRJ offers a range of offender programs aimed at rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. Among these is the ministry program facilitated by Life Transformers, a volunteer organization dedicated to providing services and activities to inmates. Life Transformers' mission is to help lower recidivism rates through one-on-one counseling and by supplying literature to ease the anxiety caused by incarceration. They ensure equal treatment for all faith groups concerning diets, reading materials, and worship beliefs, provided these services comply with jail security protocols.

The facility's Programs Department is committed to continuously enhancing and expanding the programs available to inmates, thanks to the support of volunteers and donations from Brunswick, Mecklenburg, and Dinwiddie counties. These programs include bible study, access to a law library, a general library, special education programs, anger management, domestic violence counseling, substance abuse classes, and a GED program.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. The jail enforces this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate.

One unique initiative is the "MRRJ Just Like Home" program, which allows individuals to send a food gift to an offender. This program aims to boost morale and remind inmates that they are remembered by those at home. Orders for this program are securely received and prepared by the jail's Kitchen Staff.

The Meherrin River Regional Jail is administered and operated by the Meherrin River Regional Jail Authority, an independent governmental body authorized under the Code of Virginia. While the Jail Authority operates as a separate entity, it collaborates closely with the Sheriff's Offices of the member jurisdictions. The Jail Authority comprises nine members appointed by Brunswick, Dinwiddie, and Mecklenburg Counties. They meet regularly to oversee the business activities, operations, and growth of the jail.
