As Mississippi’s oldest correctional institution, MSP was established in 1901 and is located on approximately 18,000 acres in Parchman, Sunflower County. The facility holds around 3,590 beds, distributed across fifty-eight support buildings and seven housing units, ranging from Unit 42 (Hospital) with 56 beds to Unit 29, the primary farming support unit, with 1,568 beds. This farming operation supplies food to three state prisons.

MSP provides vocational training in agriculture, auto body repair, automotive/diesel mechanics, communications, HVAC, welding, carpentry, electrical work, culinary arts, and marine maintenance. Additionally, inmates can participate in GED and adult basic education programs, along with substance abuse treatment, pre-release, and faith-based programs as needed.
As the facility housing all adult male offenders classified under Protective Custody, Administrative Segregation, Long-Term Administrative Segregation, and Death Row, MSP has custody levels of minimum, medium, and close. Male Death Row inmates are housed at MSP Unit 29, while female Death Row inmates are held at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County. MSP inmates contribute over 100,000 hours of free labor annually to local municipalities, counties, and state agencies.
Programs at MSP include Therapeutic Recreation, Religious and Faith-Based Programs, Independent Study and Tutorial Programs, Pre-Release Preparation, Alcohol & Drug Rehabilitation, ABE/GED Programs, Administrative Remedy Program (ARP), and PACT
MSP also offers extensive vocational skills training, with fields such as agribusiness, Auto Mechanics, Carpentry, Diesel Mechanics, Communications Systems, HVAC, Industrial Electricity, Marine Maintenance, Welding, and Culinary Arts. Mississippi Prison Industries operates a work program utilizing 296,400 inmate labor hours in textile and metal fabrication, with about 190 inmates participating each month.
In alignment with MDOC policies, MSP is a tobacco-free facility. All forms of tobacco, substitutes, and smoking paraphernalia are prohibited for inmates, staff, and visitors, with possession resulting in administrative action.
Executions for state offenders are conducted at MSP’s Unit 17 by lethal injection.
