The RDC serves as a crucial maximum-security intake facility for adult males entering the Indiana DOC system. All adult males are initially received, assessed, and classified at RDC before being transferred to long-term facilities. Completed in phases in 1971 and 1993, the facility accommodates more than 600 incarcerated individuals. While no programs are available during intake due to the short duration of stay, each undergoes comprehensive assessments, including physical and mental health evaluations, addiction recovery services, and educational testing, to determine their facility and program placement. Throughout their time at RDC, every individual receives a thorough medical and dental examination, psychological interview, lab work for communicable diseases, and educational testing to assess their needs and readiness for placement within the correctional system.
All adult males are received at RDC, classified and transferred to long-term facilities. This is except; those offenders sentenced to death bypass RDC and go directly to death row at Indiana State Prison and Juvenile offenders sentenced as adults are incarcerated at the Pendleton Juvenile facility until reaching the age of eighteen.
RDC was completed in two phases: the first phase consisted of 204 cells and was completed in 1971. Phase two was completed in 1993, which added 144 additional cells and administrative and operational space. RDC has a capacity/total of 695 offenders.
