The Clayton County Prison, overseen by the Clayton County Corrections Department, exclusively houses convicted state inmates under the regulatory authority of the Georgia Department of Corrections. Distinguished from the Clayton County Jail managed by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, which detains adult pre-trial inmates awaiting court sentencing, the prison is solely dedicated to convicted state prisoners.
With a current capacity of 242 inmates, the facility primarily accommodates minimum to medium-risk inmates. Approximately 55% of the inmate population falls under minimum security and can work under civilian supervision, while the remainder, classified as medium custody, work directly under Corrections Officers' supervision within or outside the prison premises.
Inmates at the facility are engaged in various work details, including supervised crews involved in parks and recreation maintenance, refuse and landfill operations, water authority tasks, and custodial positions with government agencies. Additionally, the Chaplain's office offers religious studies, choir participation, and worship/prayer services.
