The Big Spring Correctional Facility, commonly referred to as the Cedar Hill Facility, is a privately operated federal prison complex managed by The GEO Group in Big Spring, Texas. Operating under contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), the facility securely houses more than 900 federal inmates within a multi-unit correctional environment designed for low-security federal incarceration. The institution is divided into four distinct housing components known as the Airpark, Flightline, Interstate, and Cedar Hill units, each serving specific inmate housing and operational functions. Located in West Texas along Interstate 20, the prison has become a major component of the federal correctional system and one of the largest correctional employers in the Big Spring region.
The facility provides a broad range of inmate services and rehabilitation programs intended to support institutional stability and prepare offenders for eventual release. Inmates housed at Big Spring Correctional Facility have access to educational programming, vocational instruction, psychological evaluations, medical care, counseling services, and religious programs representing multiple faith traditions. The prison also maintains both legal libraries and leisure reading libraries, allowing inmates access to legal research materials, educational resources, and recreational reading opportunities during incarceration.
One of the most significant components of the facility’s programming is its educational and rehabilitation focus. Inmates may participate in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses for both American and Mexican educational systems, and General Educational Development (GED) preparation programs. Correspondence courses and vocational opportunities are also available to eligible inmates seeking to improve educational achievement and employment readiness while incarcerated. These programs are designed to help offenders strengthen literacy, communication skills, and job qualifications before reentering society.
The prison also operates extensive substance abuse counseling and rehabilitation programming for inmates struggling with addiction-related issues. Drug and alcohol treatment services are organized into four structured phases focusing on substance abuse education, life and living skills development, obsessive and compulsive behavioral patterns, and core addiction-related issues. Counseling and behavioral intervention programs are designed to help inmates better understand the underlying causes of substance abuse while developing healthier coping mechanisms and personal accountability strategies. These services reflect the broader federal correctional emphasis on rehabilitation and reducing recidivism through treatment-based programming.
Today, the Big Spring Correctional Facility remains an important part of the federal prison system because of its large inmate capacity, multi-unit design, and extensive educational and rehabilitation services. Through its partnership with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and management by The GEO Group, the facility continues housing federal inmates within a structured correctional environment focused on security, rehabilitation, education, and long-term reintegration preparation. Its role as both a major correctional institution and significant regional employer continues making the facility an important presence within West Texas and the broader federal corrections landscape.
