Can an inmate attend a parent’s funeral out of state?

Is an inmate allowed to attend funeral services of a mother that passed away if the family member is in another state? If yes what is the process?

It is possible, but very rare, especially if the funeral is in another state.

It is possible, but very rare, especially if the funeral is in another state.

For an inmate to attend a funeral, the facility would have to grant a furlough, which means temporary release under supervision. This is tightly controlled and only approved in limited situations.

What affects approval:

  • Custody level, minimum security inmates have a better chance
  • Time remaining on the sentence
  • Disciplinary record
  • Nature of the offense
  • Security risks and logistics

Out of state travel makes approval even less likely because it requires more coordination, staffing, and cost.

What the process looks like:

  • The inmate must speak with their counselor or case manager
  • Contact the chaplain, who often helps verify the death and support the request
  • Submit a formal request that goes up to the warden for approval
  • The facility may require documentation, like a death certificate or obituary

Alternative options:
Since furloughs are rarely granted, many facilities offer:

  • special visit with family at the institution
  • Time with the chaplain for counseling
  • In some cases, arrangements to view services remotely if available

Bottom line:

  • It is not impossible, but it is unlikely, especially across state lines
  • The request must go through proper channels quickly
  • The chaplain and counselor are the best place to start

If this just happened, the sooner the request is made, the better the chances, even though approval is still not common.
